Curriculum
Degree: Master of Arts in Linguistics
The Master of Arts in Linguistics is designed to be completed in three years. Although a few students take longer to finish, the program must be completed within five years. The degree consists of 39 credits in the following manner:
Core courses
Students must complete four (4) core courses, for a minimum total of twelve (12) credits. Click here for the core courses.
Elective courses
Students should select electives appropriate to their program of study in consultation with their program advisor.
Students who choose the Thesis option (Plan A2) must choose five (5) elective courses, for a total of fifteen (15) credits.
Students who choose the Independent Study option (Plan B) must select seven (7) elective courses, for a total of twenty-one (21) credits.
Thesis or Independent Study
To fulfill the graduation requirements, students must write a Thesis (Plan A2) or an Independent Study paper (Plan B).
Students who choose Plan A2 will write and defend a Thesis for a total of fifteen (15) credits.
Students who choose Plan B will write and defend an Independent Study paper for a total of twenty-one (21) credits. Students who choose this option must first take a comprehensive examination.
